La madre di tutti i monetaristi, la professoressa Anna Schwartz, dall’alto dei suoi 92 anni, esprime la sua opinione sulla crisi dei mutui immobiliari. La causa è da ricercarsi nel comportamento della Fed, che mantenendo i tassi all’1 percento tra il 2003 e il 2004 ha creato enormi incentivi allo sviluppo di strumenti altamente rischiosi.
They [the U.S. Central Bankers, ndr] need to speak frankly to the market and acknowledge how bad the problems are, and acknowledge their own failures in letting this happen. This is what is needed to restore confidence. There never would have been a sub-prime mortgage crisis if the Fed had been alert. This is something Alan Greenspan must answer for.
